Collaboratively written by solo artist Dan Hoyle and Berkeley Rep Artistic Director Tony Taccone - Hoyle's first piece written for others to perform and both men's first show not based on interviews or real events - "Game On" is a compact comedy that covers all the bases at once. Environmentalism, sports addiction, ruthless capitalism, bugs for protein, male bonding and the Discovery Channel jostle for attention in the world premiere that opened Wednesday. A cabdriver from Brooklyn with a broad sentimental streak - try to resist the way his face melts watching TV footage of an ice-melt stranded polar bear - Vinnie has come up with the idea of insect-protein as not only a great environmental cause (he made those spring rolls) but the next big, green get-rich-quick scheme. A former successful hedge-fund manager, he's the lead pitchman for their bug project, counting on the ballgame to lure his target environmental venture capitalist into the room. Cassidy Brown is outstanding as a mild middle-class white man performing a rap song about climate change, complete with hilarious whale impersonation.
