A mural by famed San Francisco painter and sculptor Rigo 23 — commissioned by UCSF but withdrawn after an artistic dispute — will finally meet its public on a gymnasium wall across the street from the San Leandro BART Station. Called “The Great Migration of the Monarch Butterflies,” the painting is 24 feet tall and 180 feet long, and will be dedicated Saturday. The featured speaker is Ricardo Gouveia, 48, an immigrant from Portugal, who signs his work Rigo 23. According to Rigo 23, the mural design was sent back for alterations, which included removing the woman from the mural. No one puts the words San Leandro and art in the same sentence,” says Cassidy, an attorney who works in San Francisco, “but we are laying the foundation now for that to take hold. Though unintentional, the butterflies mural is site specific because San Leandro has a spot for migrating monarchs. The trademark of Rigo 23 is a site-specific description in the block lettering of a freeway sign, and on a die wall, he has painted the obvious message, “San Leandro.” “It is a modest latex paint mural on cinder block and metal sheeting, rather than an exquisite ceramic tile on a brand new reinforced concrete building,” Rigo 23 says, comparing locations. Reported by SFGate 21 hours ago.
