A 25-year-old man accused of robbing an ATM customer at knifepoint and then leading law enforcement on a wild chase through Burlingame and Hillsborough last August will be committed to an addiction recovery program until his trial.
The program will allow Daniel Thomas Cassidy to receive credit for time served -- although he is out of custody on bond for $100,000 bail -- while he awaits trial, currently set for June 17.
A judge made the ruling this week.
Cassidy was released on bond Aug. 26 for bail paid by Breda and Brian Cassidy.
The defendant is charged with robbery, reckless driving, resisting an officer, property damage and failure to stop at an accident, as well as a sentence-enhancing allegation of using a knife.
He faces a maximum seven years in prison, according to an official with the San Mateo County District Attorney's office.
According to prosecutors, Cassidy approached a woman at a Burlingame ATM Aug. 28, brandished a knife and demanded $100 in cash three times.
According to San Mateo County District Attorney's Office notes, Cassidy grabbed the money and was spotted by a police officer getting into his truck minutes later.
The officer followed Cassidy with his lights and siren on but the suspect refused to stop.
Going as fast as 60 miles per hour in 25 and 35 zones, Cassidy lost control of his truck twice around turns, crashing into another car and eventually getting stuck in a bush in Hillsborough.
The officer then shot Cassidy twice with a stun gun but he kept running. Eventually he was subdued.
According to the DA, in the scuffle to get Cassidy cuffed, the arresting officer noticed Cassidy was holding a knife and had several cuts on his stomach.
Cassidy was taken to the hospital for treatment and a psych evaluation.
He will receive treatment at an Ohloff Recovery Programs facility. Reported by Patch 3 days ago.
