A season to remember for the Oak Creek girls' basketball team came to an abrupt end Thursday night.

The Franklin Sabers used a 20-7 fourth quarter advantage to pull a 58-53 upset and shock the top-seeded Knights in the sectional semifinal.

Oak Creek led most of the way and took a 46-38 lead into the fourth quarter. But after the Sabers' huge comeback in the final frame, Oak Creek's dream season concluded far sooner than they hoped.

The Knights had not lost since their opening game in late November, running off 23 wins in a row and climbing to No. 2 in the Associated Press state poll.

Franklin was paced by Carly Graverson's 23 points, while Cassidy Mihalko added 20, according to WisSports.net. Katie Finn led Oak Creek with 18 points; Steph Kostowicz chipped in 15.

WASHINGTON -- After a surprising string of victories last fall, Democrats now face a challenging terrain as they look to hold onto their Senate majority in 2014 and prevent Republicans from gaining full control of Congress during President Barack Obama's final two years. His party must defend a hefty 21 seats, including seven in largely rural states that the president lost last fall.

The task of maintaining control of the Senate has grown more daunting in recent weeks, with four Senate Democrats announcing plans to retire. Sen. Carl Levin of Michigan disclosed his decision on Thursday, following Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin and West Virginia Sen. Jay Rockefeller. New Jersey Sen. Frank Lautenberg has also said he will retire, but Democrats will be heavily favored to hold the seat. A fifth Democratic retirement could come soon from South Dakota Sen. Tim Johnson, who has not yet announced his intentions.

Democrats control 55 seats in the Senate, after November elections in which they did better than expected and gained two seats to pad their majority. That means Republicans would need to pick up six seats next year to take control for the first time since 2006.

Twenty months before the mid-term elections, Republicans are laying the groundwork to try to capitalize on the defense-playing Democrats, working to recruit strong candidates in Arkansas, Alaska, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Dakota and West Virginia – all states carried by Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney last year. They're also buoyed by history, which shows the party controlling the White House typically loses seats during the midterm of a second-term president.

"The map looks pretty good" for the GOP, said Greg Strimple, an Idaho-based Republican pollster for Senate and gubernatorial candidates. "If I had a deck of cards to play, I'd rather play the Republican deck than the Democratic deck."

Indeed, Republicans have only 14 of their seats up for re-election and only one – Sen. Susan Collins of Maine – is in a state Obama carried last year. Just two GOP senators have said they will retire – Mike Johanns of Nebraska and Saxby Chambliss of Georgia – and they represent states that favor Republicans.

Democrats say 2014 could be a repeat of the past two election years, when their well-funded candidates benefited from the missteps of tea party Republicans who were nominated in bruising primaries over more mainstream GOP candidates.

Mindful of those scars, Republicans are watching to see if such polarizing primaries materialize in states like Georgia, Michigan, Iowa and South Dakota. The outcome of those primaries could determine whether the GOP will try to take advantage of Democratic retirements.

Jim Manley, a former aide to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., doesn't deny that the spate of Democratic retirements make it that much tougher to keep control in 2014. "The math is very much against Democrats," he said. Even so, he adds, "The real question, however, is whether Republicans are going to keep on nominating extremists or they're going to finally figure out that they've got to go mainstream."

At this early stage, both sides are focusing mostly on recruiting candidates – and watching for signs of how the opposition is positioning.

An early skirmish has emerged in Kentucky, where Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell faces re-election next year and is working to prevent both Republican and Democratic challenges. Among the Democrats talking about running: actress Ashley Judd, who grew up in Kentucky but lives in Tennessee.

Some of the states that could turn into Senate battlegrounds next year include:

MICHIGAN: Republicans see a pickup opportunity with Levin's departure even though the party last won a Senate race in 1994. Several Republicans may seek the nomination, including members of the state's veteran congressional delegation, including Reps. Mike Rogers, Dave Camp and Justin Amash, a favorite of libertarians. Democrats could turn to Rep. Gary Peters, who represents suburban Detroit, or Mark Schauer, a former congressman from a rural district south of Lansing.

IOWA: Harkin's decision not to seek a sixth term has created the state's first open Senate race since 1974. Rep. Bruce Braley, who has tried to position himself in the mold of the liberal Harkin, is the only Democrat to declare his candidacy. Among Republicans, Rep. Tom Latham declined to run while Rep. Steve King, a conservative, has expressed interest but has also been counseled by GOP Gov. Terry Branstad to wait. Lesser-known GOP prospects Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds, a Branstad protégé who is also popular with the state's evangelical right, and state Agriculture Secretary Bill Northey, popular with the state's agribusiness community, are exploring candidacies.

SOUTH DAKOTA: Republicans view South Dakota as a key potential pick-up, especially if Johnson retires. Johnson has made huge strides in recovering from a debilitating 2006 brain hemorrhage, but the state has trended sharply Republican in the past six years. Former two-term Gov. Mike Rounds began campaigning for the GOP Senate nomination shortly after the 2012 election, but it's not clear if Rounds, vulnerable to attack from spending hawks on his right, will face a primary challenge. If Johnson retires, former Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin and Johnson's son, Brendan Johnson, the state's U.S. attorney, are potential prospects.

LOUISIANA: Democrat Mary Landrieu is again a prime target for Republicans as she seeks a fourth term. Republicans have yet to identify a challenger and Landrieu, the daughter of one of the state's most durable political families, has $2.5 million in her campaign account. Two Republican congressmen, Charles Boustany and Steve Scalise, have taken their names out of consideration while two House colleagues, physicians John Fleming and Bill Cassidy, are mulling bids, along with Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne, a favorite of moderates. Tea party conservatives are pushing former Rep. Jeff Landry.

Republicans view West Virginia Rep. Shelley Moore Capito as a strong candidate to capture the seat of retiring Rockefeller. In North Carolina, Democrats are defending Sen. Kay Hagan in a state narrowly lost by Obama. And Alaska could be pivotal, with Sen. Mark Begich, a Democrat, potentially facing a challenge from Republican Lt. Gov. Mead Treadwell.

Coaches from St. Aedan's and St. Margaret's faced off Saturday night at Pearl River High School in the sixth annual CYO Coaches Challenge.

St. Margaret’s overcame an early deficit to win 43-33. The win gives St. Margaret’s 4-2 series lead all-time.

Proceeds raised from the game go toward scholarships and the two CYO programs. With the win, St. Margaret’s holds onto the Liz Houston Memorial trophy another year. Each team’s jerseys had patches on their sleeves honoring Houston, who died in 2009, and Tommy Scognamiglio, the 16-year-old Pearl River High School student who died last year.

During a break in the game, Cassidy McNeill was honored for starting up The Tommy Lollipop Project, which is named for Scognamiglio. The Tommy Lollipop Project raises money to pay for backpacks and tote bags filled with gifts for young cancer patients. She was also presented with $500 for the foundation as well. Everything is going pretty well for Oliver in the Wednesday, March 20th return episode of Arrow, "which means [it's] about to go really bad," Stephen Amell told fans of The CW series at Saturday night's PaleyFest panel. After saving the life of his enemy, Malcolm Merlyn (John Barrowman), Oliver Queen (Amell) will eventually have to face the Dark Archer, but he has other problems in store as well, the least of which involve the returns of The Huntress (Jessica de Gouw), The Count (Seth Gabel) and Deadshot (Michael Rowe). Spoiler Alert: A new sizzle reel shown before the panel teased Gabel's return as The Count, The Huntress apparently telling Detective Lance (Paul Blackthorne) that Oliver Queen is the Hood, and Oliver and Slade (Manu Bennett) teaming up with Shado (Celina Jade) on the island! When introducing Katie Cassidy on stage, DC Comics's Chief Creative Officer and moderator Geoff Johns called her the "Black Canary to be." [...] executive producer Marc Guggenheim reminded fans that it took Oliver five years to evolve into this hero, so they're letting her story unfold in a realistic way as well and added that her transition has to be earned. "For Laurel, where she's at right now, we don't want to do disservice to Laurel or Oliver that she could have a bad day and put on fishnets and just start killing people," executive producer Andrew Kreisberg says. Stanley Krulikowski, 67, of Tobyhanna, PA, passed away after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer on Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at Compassionate Care Hospice, Trenton.

Born in Newark, NJ, Stanley was a longtime resident of the Allentown and Hamilton areas before retiring to Tobyhanna. A graduate of Seton Hall University, Stanley retired in 1999 as postmaster from the Hightstown Post Office after a 26-year career with the federal government. He was a former member of St. Gregory the Great Church in Hamilton Square, and was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather.

Son of the late Peter and Florence Krulikowski, he is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Linda Pisano Krulikowski; his daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa and Robert Mohring of Hamilton, Lori and Steven LoCascio of Essex Fells, and Lana and Jim Giglio of Hamilton, as well as his grandchildren, Nick Mohring, Cassidy, Parker and Chase LoCascio, and Evie and Ella Giglio.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Monday, March 11, at St. Gregory the Great Church, Nottingham Way, Hamilton. Entombment will follow in Holy Cross Burial Park, East Brunswick. Friends may call Saturday, March 9, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the Peppler Funeral Home, 114 S. Main St. Allentown. A fundraiser for Taylor Sack, a Millis High School junior who was left paralyzed after a Feb. 22 skiing accident, raised over $8,500 this weekend.

A two-hour "Ryde for Taylor Ryde-a-Thon" was held on Saturday at Medfield’s H.Y.P. Studio, 120 North Meadows Road, where people sponsored a bike and several people then took shifts riding to raise money for Taylor and his family.

"It went great! We had over 60 'ryders' and we raised over $8,500," said organizer Katie O'Connell, who is also a family friend. "We want to give a big thank you to HYP, HYP staff, owners Dennis Ozer and Debra Goodman, and all the Ryders that came from all over -- Medfield, Sherborn, Medway, Millis, Sudbury, Natick, Duxbury, Norfolk, Holliston and more. Roche Bros donated fruit and bagels for the ride."

Many Medfield residents participated in this event. The football teams of the Medfield Warriors and the Millis/Hopedale Mohawks have enjoyed a good relationship for several years. Many of the players from both teams played Viking Pop Warner together, and the two football programs work out together over the summer. 

On Wednesday, Taylor was transferred to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, one of the top rehabilitation hospitals in the nation, specializing in thoracic spinal cord injury which Taylor has, said O’Connell.

Taylor has use of his arms but has no feeling from his chest down, he said on Facebook last week.

Earlier this morning, Taylor posted this message from the Shepherd Center.



I honestly think this is what I will miss the most, I love all of you like family and will be back next year for motivation.♥ — at Shepherd Center. 



He was referring to a hudl reel of a Sept. 21 game against Norton in which Taylor had the Top Play of the game. "Sacks capitalizes on the blocked kick and takes it in for the win," says the clip.  

Additional fundraisers are being organized to raise money for the Sack family to cover expenses not covered by insurance. 

"There are so many costs to a family during this time and in the future," said O'Connell.

Five high school athletes from Spring Valley were honored Tuesday by being named to All-CIF teams for their various winter sports.

Steele Canyon soccer players Kiana Quarles and Kailynn Janis, both seniors, and junior Jessica Warner were named to the girls soccer all-star teams. Janis and Warner were named to the second team, while Quarles was named to the first team. She was one of the highest scoring players in the county, with 68 points on the year on 26 goals and 16 assists.

Mount Miguel senior basketball player Izzy Wagner was named to the All-CIF second team. Wagner, a Patch Athlete of the Week winner, led the entire CIF section in scoring, at more than 34 points per game.

Additionally, Miracle Tausaga, a junior, was named to the All-CIF second team for wrestling.

A total of 13 high school athletes from La Jolla high schools were honored Tuesday by being named to All-CIF teams for their various winter sports. The Bishop's School had seven athletes, La Jolla High School had five and La Jolla Country Day School one athlete join the all-star teams.

La Jolla Country Day's *Kelsey Plum* was named the Player of the Year for girls basketball. Plum, who surpassed the 2,000-point mark in her career in February, averaged 27.4 points a game, according to the San Diego Hall of Champions. She helped lead the LJCDS Torreys to four straight section titles.

Plum is joined by *Imani Littleton* and *Devon Roeper*, both of The Bishop's School, on the girls basketball all-star first team.

*Jessica Webster* is the second athlete to be named Player of the Year in La Jolla. Webster, a girls water polo star on Bishop's team, joins seven other athletes from La Jolla to make the CIF girls water polo team. *Hannah Carrillo* and *Natalie Chun* of Bishop's, and *Heidi Moreland* and *Lauren Silver* of La Jolla High School made the first team. *Madison Kafka-Asper* of Bishop's, and *Sarah Young* and *Taylor Betrand* of La Jolla High School made the second team.

Bishop's girls water polo coach *Doug Peabody* made Coach of the Year.

Additionally, La Jolla High School's *Karly Zlatic* and Bishop's *Geny Decker* made the girls soccer second team.

West Hills High School senior Emily Cole was honored Tuesday by being named to the All-CIF girls basketball team, on a roster with some of the best players in the county.

132 Athletes in six winter sports earned first or second team honors in a list released by the San Diego Hall of Champions on Tuesday.

Cole will appear on the second team due to her amazing statistics for the season- 389 total points, an average of 14.4 points a game, she made 78 percent of free throws, the highest stats in East County, and scored the most three-point shots in East County (beating the next best by 25 baskets), at 59 for the season.

Cole also made the first 2012-13 All-East County team, which is a selection of the best Eat County players made by East County Sports.com. Cole also made the East County top players lists based on statistics for each category. She also made last year's All-CIF team.

No other athletes from West Hills or Santana High Schools made the list.

In 1969, then-Governor Ronald Reagan established Portuguese Immigrant Week in California.

In honor of that event San Leandro dignitaries laid a wreath at the Statue of the Portuguese Immigrant at Root Park on East 14th Street this weekend.

Present were former mayors Shelia Young, Tony Santos and Ellen Corbett, now a state senator, and current Mayor Stephen Cassidy.

The Library of Congress says the first Portuguese immigrant to San Leandro was Antonio Silva in 1861. His family settled and named Oakes Boulevard. By 1930 there were nearly 12,000 people of Portuguese descent in the city.

In 1880, Council No. 1 of the União Portuguesa do Estado da Califórnia (Portuguese Union of the State of California, U.P.E.C.) was established in San Leandro.

THE U.P.E.C. Supreme Council is still based in San Leandro. 

The Frietas Library, also in San Leandro, houses one of the largest collections of Portuguese history and literature in the United States.

The library is located in the Portuguese Fraternal Society of America building at 1120 East 14th Street.

Patch Coronado, CA --

Four high school athletes from Coronado High School were honored Tuesday by being named to All-CIF teams for their play in soccer and water polo.

CHS senior Kyle Koshland and junior Abigail Callahan were named to the All-CIF first teams in boys and girls soccer; sophomore Mackenzie Wiley made the first team in girls water polo. Sophomore Cassidy Wiley made the second team in girls water polo.

Boys soccer coach Brian Hiatt-Aleu also scored a big honor, being named CIF Coach of the Year. The award follows his team's win in the Div. IV championships earlier this month.

Having the teens named to the All-CIF teams capped a recent spate of successes for Coronado athletes. Another group of them received honors not just for their prowess on the field, but in the classroom.

Five of them, Victoria Davis, golf, Brooke Gensler, tennis, Ryan Halvorson, football, Chris Leary, boys cross country and Sam Wisotzki, water polo, were singled out by the CIF as Cymer Scholars (named for a San Diego semiconductor company).

Coronado had the most teams honored for their combined athletic-scholar achievements, five, in the south section, as compared to the other four CIF sections in the county. Other schools had no more than three teams honored.
