Framingham High Jazz Band Wins Gold Medal and Qualifies For State Finals Patch Framingham, MA --

Framingham High's Jazz Band 1 participated in the Massachusetts Association for Jazz Education’s Northeast District Jazz Festival and received the school's first-ever gold medal.

The winning of a gold medal at the regional competition qualified Framingham High into the state finals on Saturday, March 23. Framingham is hosting the state finals. The competition will feature gold medal, and a select few silver medal bands, from across the state.

“This year we did more than learn the music, we felt the music; and we embodied the sound," said junior Katie Cassidy. "Earning this gold medal has given us the confidence boost that we needed. The fact that we can enjoy the music while playing it is an accomplishment in itself, but having a tangible representation of all the hard work we've put into these three songs sure is rewarding."

Also at the regional competition Framingham High pianist Prathit Kadam, was awarded the Most Outstanding Musician Award for the entire festival.

“Throughout my four years in high school, I've participated in the school's jazz band and each year has given me the opportunity to grow with the jazz band," said Kadam, a senior. "I'm extremely proud of this group of musicians. Everyone showed so much effort and it really paid off. All in all, if you enjoy what you're doing, people will notice.”

Framingham High musicians Michael Berkson and Jeremy Galloway received  Outstanding Musicianship Awards.

“I’m so proud this band. Our past few months together have been really different because this group of musicians has a work ethic and a drive to improve like I’ve never seen before, and we definitely proved that in our performance," said Berkson, who plays tenor sax. "This is a perfect way to go out my senior year. I’m looking forward to performing at finals.”

The award-winning jazz band is directed by Brian Cervone, head of instrumental music at Framingham High  and director of the high school bands.

“For the four years I have been in this Framingham Jazz Ensemble, we have earned a silver at MAJE thrice. To earn a Gold medal my last and final year of high school is absolutely phenomenal," said Zack Wong, who plays trumpet. " To be frank, at the beginning of the year, I never would have guessed we had the potential to earn a Gold medal. We turned out to be the strongest group in Framingham Jazz band history. I am extremely proud of this ensemble for the amount of hard work we put in. To now have the opportunity to perform at state finals at our own school is phenomenal.”

“This is a huge accomplishment. ... This is the first time that this jazz band
has ever won this medal at this festival since Mr. Cervone has been the director, and everyone in this jazz band should be extremely proud of both themselves and each other for making this happen," said senior Nikhil Garg, who plays alto sax.

In February, the band hired a well-known music educator named Paul Alberta to present a workshop. “Take no prisoners!” was sort of his catchphrase. Senior Brian Gilligan, said that is what the Framingham High Jazz band did a regionals and what it plans to do at the finals.

***

Tonight, the public can hear how good the jazz band is, as well as listen to performances of a half dozen other middle and high school bands at the Music in Our Schools Concert at Walsh Middle School at 7.

Scheduled to perform tonight are: Cameron Middle Jazz Band, Fuller Middle Jazz Band, Walsh Middle Jazz Band, Framingham High Jazz band, Framingham High Jazz Band 2 and an all-band grand finale performance featuring more than 120 students.

Admission $3 and proceeds will benefit the Framingham Public Schools instrumental music programs.

Lower Moreland Parents Host Charity Event in Honor of Their Daughter

Lower Moreland Parents Host Charity Event in Honor of Their Daughter Patch Lower Moreland, PA --

Lower Moreland residents Todd and Lisa Kupper went through something no parents should ever have to go through.

Celebrating their 10-year wedding anniversary, the Kupper’s suffered a cooking accident in their own home when their 4-year-old daughter suffered serious burns after she pulled a hot skillet of oil off the stove.

The physical damage was evident, but the emotional toll from the traumatic event was something the family was going to have to take day by day.

“She was burned significantly on her leg and foot,” Lisa Kupper said. “Just the trauma of that and for the family, what we went through, it kind of opened our eyes to other children who have been burned and what their families go through.”

Realizing that other families are going through similar events, the Kupper’s decided to start a charity called Heal the Burn, who’s mission is to educate, support and care for those who have been affected by the physical and emotional trauma caused by burns.

Heal the Burn was founded in Dec. of 2010, and over the years it has grown into educational resource for families going through the same ordeal with their children as the Kupper’s. There have been fundraisers, educational videos on their web site, as well as the support a fellowship program at St. Christopher’s Hospital in Northeast Philadelphia dedicated to help serve burn victims.

*Learn more about Heal the Burn*

On Friday, April 5, the Kupper’s will host their third annual fundraiser at the Mitchell Performing Arts Center in Bryn Athyn. It is a Magic and Comedy Show featuring Kupper’s husband, who will emcee the event.

“It gave us a venue to do a show,” Kupper siad. “He has a lot of friends who do magic. It’s a lot of fun. It’s not like a kid magic show, but it’s not inappropriate for kids. We get a lot of generous people and organizations give us things to auction off like sports stuff and gift cards. All the proceeds go to the fellowship position at St. Christopher’s Hospital.”

The Kupper’s have paid half of the yearly salary of $22,000 for the fellowship position through donations and fundraisers. They also sponsor burn victims to go to overnight camp that exclusively houses burn victims at Mid-Atlantic Burn Camp in Virginia.

“We met a lot of people who went through something like that,” Kupper said. “It’s something that you don’t realize how common it is. We were just parents who thought, lets just try and help other people. We basically gathered all our friends and family and said this is what we want to do.

Ticket prices for the show are $30 for adults, and $20 for kids under 12-years-old. The show will feature Guiness World Record Holder John Cassidy, Sideshow Comedy of Doc Swan, Mike Miller and Richie B. Reported by Patch 14 hours ago.

Aquatic Center Backers Petition Court to Order Special Election Patch Warren, NJ --

Attorneys for the Berkeley Aquatic Center filed a motion in Union County Superior Court hoping to force Berkeley Heights Township into setting a date for a special election which could pave the way for the center's proposed 51,000-square foot facility in Warren.

The township had been ordered by Union County Superior Court Judge Karen M. Cassidy to set a date for an election for residents to weigh in on the BAC's request for a sewer connection for the Warren center, after the Township Council voted against allowing the connection in 2011.

According to a press release issued by the Back the BAC, which supports the proposed Warren facility, the court's order was issued on Feb. 25, when a township-requested injunction against a petition drive for a vote was denied.

The press release noted Judge Cassidy ordered the township to schedule a special election date within 10 days of the order, in compliance with conditions set forth in the Faulkner Act, but the township hasn't done so.

"This court decision was the latest in a series of failed attempt by Mayor Bruno and the Township Council to deny Berkeley Heights' residents the vote on a sewer agreement allowing the BAC to connect to the Berkley Heights Sewer Plant and to block a new BAC facility from being built in Warren Township," the press release said.

In December 2012, weeks after a committee of petitioners on behalf of the BAC submitted more than the requisite amount of signatures required by law to set a special election, the township filed its unsuccessful request for an injunction.

"Mayor Bruno and the Township Council continue to try to stop or delay this special election. Under his direction the township failed to follow the law and set an election date back in December," said the BAC's Jim Wood. "Then they filed an attempt to get an injunction—which failed. Now, even under a clear and direct order from the court, they choose to remain defiant."

"Keep in mind that throughout this entire process we've been asking the Mayor and Township Council for an opportunity to sit down and discuss this issue so that maybe we can come to an agreement that would put an end to this costly litigation and forgo the need for a costly special election," Wood said. "Every one of those requests, even one as recently as last week, were denied." Reported by Patch 5 hours ago.

Expedition 34 Return Home Delayed Due To Severe Weather, Undocking Scheduled For Tonight

The return of three Expedition 34 crew members aboard the International Space Station (ISS) was delayed due to inclement weather at the landing site in Kazakhstan today. American astronaut Kevin Ford and Russian cosmonauts Oleg Novitsky and Yevgeny Tarelkin were scheduled to land early this morning but will be held over until the weather clears for a safe landing, according to the Russian space agency Roscosmos.

Russian space officials said a severe winter storm blanketed the region with fog and freezing rain and would hamper rescue helicopters deployed to make a rendezvous with the Soyuz landing. The scheduled undocking of the Soyuz TMA-06M spacecraft will now take place later this evening and arrive in the northeast region of Arkalyk, Kazakhstan Saturday morning (local time).

The three Expedition 34 crew had already boarded the capsule and were ready to close the hatch when Russian officials called off the undocking at the last minute.

Victor Solovyev, chief flight director at Russia’s Mission Control told the three crew members that “the weather is really horrible” and the undocking would have to be delayed. The official announcement of the delay came from the Russian state commission headed by veteran cosmonaut Sergei Krikalev.

"Due to the bad weather conditions in the Soyuz capsule landing zone, it has been decided to postpone the landing until March 16," Roscosmos said on its website.

Russian meteorologists forecast better weather conditions for a Saturday morning landing, with mostly clear skies.

This is not the first time a Soyuz return was delayed. In 2009, two separate crews were held back a day; one due to inclement weather and another for technical reasons.

If the all clear is given, the three crew members will undock and depart the orbiting space lab at 7:43 p.m. EDT tonight and head for Arkalyk, Kazakhstan for a landing at around 11:06 p.m. EDT (Saturday March 16 at 9:06 a.m. local time). They will have spent 144 days in space since their October 23, 2012 launch.

When Soyuz undocks from the ISS, Canada Space Agency’s Chris Hadfield will take the reigns as Commander of Expedition 35. He will become the first Canadian astronaut to take command of the station. Hadfield and crewmates NASA astronaut Tom Marshburn and Russian cosmonaut Roman Romanenko will tend to the station for two weeks until three new members arrive: NASA astronaut Chris Cassidy and Russian cosmonauts Pavel Vinogradov and Alexander Misurkin (future Expedition 36 crew).

NASA TV will have live coverage of the Expedition 34 crew departure beginning at 4 p.m. EDT today. After farewells between the crew members, the hatch on the Soyuz capsule will close at around 4:25 p.m. NASA coverage of the undocking will begin at 7:15 p.m. and landing coverage will begin at 9:45 p.m. and will continue until the crew touch down safely in Kazakhstan and arrive at the medical tent on site. Intrepid College Prep Signs Lease to Open 5-12 School in Southeast Nashville

Location will be at Lakeshore Christian Church on Bell Forge Lane East at Bell Road for July 2013 Opening

Nashville, TN (PRWEB) March 15, 2013

Intrepid College Prep, a tuition-free public charter school for grades 5-12, has successfully secured a location in Antioch as their future home. Intrepid College Prep will be located within a 22,000-square foot block of open space on the south side of the Lakeshore Christian Church building. Of the partnership with Lakeshore Christian Church, school leader Mia Howard states, “We knew immediately that this space was the right choice for Intrepid. We needed to be located in the Hickory Hollow area to take part in revitalizing this community and we also wanted community stakeholders to stand behind what we’re doing at Intrepid ⎯ providing a high-quality tuition-free choice for families. We found that at Lakeshore.”

Since receiving their approval from the MNPS Board of Education to operate a new middle and high school in Antioch, Intrepid considered many facility options in search of the right space for a small but growing school. “Our facility needs are unique as a slow growth school. We don’t need as much space now as we will need next year, or the year after that but families want and deserve consistency,” says the school’s Facilities Sub-Committee Chair, Crews Johnston.

When Lakeshore acquired the Bell Forge facility in 2007, the space now leased to Intrepid was occupied by Superpetz, the animal supplies retailer. Superpetz vacated the space during their 2010 wave of store closures.

“It takes a very unique tenant to lease space from a church. Because of our strong convictions about the future use of our 22,000-square foot space, we had already passed on other leasing opportunities when along came Intrepid,” said Randy Cordell, Senior Pastor at Lakeshore Christian. “The overarching mission of serving the community is shared by Lakeshore and Intrepid. We think they will be a great fit for the space and look forward to seeing them grow to provide a high-quality education to Nashville youth.”

Although Intrepid will have access to all 22,000-square feet the opening day of school, Intrepid plans to build out only 4,500-square feet of classroom facilities in the first year. They will grow into the space over time until the entirety of the 22,000-square feet consists of new-construction, school-specific facilities.

Community Collaboration

Establishing Intrepid’s school home required significant community collaboration. In addition to community members helping to knock on doors and educate Antioch families about school choice, Intrepid has several board members who volunteered their professional expertise to ensure Intrepid’s search for a long-term space was successful. John Barton, a healthcare group executive with Regions Bank advised Intrepid through the process. Crews Johnston III of real estate firm Cassidy Turley, represented Intrepid during the site selection process. Ryan Holt, Associate Attorney with Sherrard & Roe, PLC, provided legal services during the lease negotiation. All are board members of Intrepid who worked pro-bono on the project. Intrepid College Prep has also worked with Hastings Architecture to design the space.

John Gifford and Austin Benedict, both brokers at the real estate firm Colliers International, represented Lakeshore in marketing the space and negotiating the Intrepid lease. “Both Lakeshore and Intrepid have very unique needs. We’re proud to have participated in a transaction that surpassed some overwhelming challenges including growing a tenant rapidly within space shared by another entity,” said Austin Benedict. “Lakeshore and Intrepid have complimentary use patterns and John and I are satisfied these two will fit very well together.”

About Intrepid College Prep

Intrepid College Prep’s mission is to provide every student in grades five through twelve with the academic foundation, financial literacy, and ethical development necessary to excel in selective colleges, earn professional opportunities, and demonstrate positive leadership. Intrepid College Prep will open to 90 students in fifth grade on July 30, 2013. Creating a unique curriculum, which includes financial literacy in every grade, Intrepid plans to offer three English Language Arts classes, two math classes and science and social studies in its middle school. Intrepid extends longer than most area middle schools with a 190-day school year, and 7:30 am to 5:00 pm school day. Within the longer school day, the school provides tutoring, homework support and daily enrichment in areas like yoga, music, basketball, and art. Intrepid College Prep was founded with the support of Building Excellent Schools and the Tennessee Charter School Incubator. Maryka Biaggio: The Pinkerton Detectives -- Good, Bad, and Ugly

$

Daniel Stashower's new nonfiction book, Hour of Peril, tells the harrowing tale of how Allan Pinkerton, founder of the Pinkerton Detective Agency, saved Abraham Lincoln from assassination in 1861. Pinkerton and his associate, female detective Kate Warne, foiled a well-planned plot to assassinate Lincoln as he made his way to the Capitol for the inauguration. Allan Pinkerton's abolitionist sympathies were well-known at the time, and Lincoln no doubt considered him an honorable man who was perfectly suited to the role of personal protector.

But not all of Allan Pinkerton's charges or the Agency's causes were so noble, and over the several decades following the Civil War the Pinkerton Agency developed a reputation for unscrupulous and even brazenly illegal activity. In 1874, after Frank and Jesse James robbed a train in Missouri, the Pinkerton Agency was hired to bring the James brothers to justice. A band of Pinkertons surrounded the James' family farm in Clay County, Missouri, and, in an attempt to flush out the brothers, pitched incendiary devices through the windows. But the brothers weren't on the scene, and one device exploded inside the house, killing Frank and Jesse's eight-year-old brother and maiming their mother. Public sentiment went with the James' family, and the Pinkertons gave up the chase, slinking off in defeat.

The Pinkertons also gained a reputation for ruthless strikebreaking, and many industrialists hired them to squelch strikes. Some people even contended that it was the Pinkertons who unleashed a bomb at what started out as a peaceful demonstration in Chicago's Haymarket Square in May 1886. The ensuing Haymarket Riot led to the death of one police officer and several demonstrators, the speedy trial of eight anarchists, and the execution of four of the anarchists. Although the allegation that the Pinkertons incited the riot was never proven, the Pinkerton's reputation as clandestine and ruthless strikebreakers no doubt fueled the rumor and lent it credibility.

The Pinkertons have cropped up in many popular books and films over the years, including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Dashiell Hammett, a one-time Pinkerton detective, admits he drew inspiration from his detective days in crafting such characters as Sam Spade. My own recently published novel, Parlor Games, is based on the true story of a beautiful young woman and the Pinkerton detective who pursued her, foiling what he and the wealthy men who hired him considered bold attempts at blackmail. The Pinkertons called May Dugas "the most dangerous woman in the world," but she dismissed this moniker as mere puffery on their part. In Parlor Games she tells her side of the story. But as in many matters historical, the truth is elusive, and readers of Parlor Games must come to their own conclusion about May Dugas and her particular Pinkerton pursuer. The show is in its fourth season and is hosted by Jared Cotter who is also host of “MSG Varsity’s Talent Show” and a popular semi-finalist from American Idol.

One school from each region will be crowned regional champion and will win $2,500 for their school.

The regional winners will then go on to “The Challenge” Championship where they square off in a Tri-State Showdown.

The school awarded the title of Tri-State Champion will receive $10,000 in prize money and each student participating in the final “Challenge” Championship game will receive $500. Reported by Patch 1 day ago.
